1975 saw their new release, A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, and – significantly – the single Bohemian Rhapsody. At 5’ 55” it should have been too long for successful radio play but it became one of the greatest singles of all time, staying at No. 1 in the UK chart for nine weeks. The video, directed by Bruce Gowers, is credited with being the first genuine promotional video. The song has regularly featured in all major pop polls and was recently named again as the best single of all time. The success of A NIGHT AT THE OPERA was equally stunning, giving the band their first platinum album.
Freddie Mercury designed the band's logo using their birth signs: two fairies for him (Virgin), two lions for Roger and John (Leo) and a crab for Brian (Cancer). The "Queen crest" included all four of the band members Zodiac signs in it. It had a crab for Brian May (Cancer), fairies for Freddie Mercury (Virgo) and lions for John Deacon and Roger Taylor (Leo). Freddie was the author of the first Queen song that entered the British charts (Seven Seas Of Rhye), the first big hit (Killer Queen) and the most famous Queen song that was on the top of charts for 9 weeks (Bohemian Rhapsody). Freddie has always been considered the front-man of the band.
The first cover featured a re-adaptation of the famous ‘Crest’ exploding and the second cover featured just “the phoenix” rising out of the ashes.
